Colleges and universities should be sustainable role models -
Bernese students take it into their own hands
Loud on the street - and committed to constructive ideas and more sustainability at Swiss universities:
This year, for the third time, students are organising 15 sustainability weeks at 36 universities throughout Switzerland as part of Sustainability Week Switzerland (SWS), organised by BENE (Association for Sustainable Development at the University of Bern), with the capital city of Bern, with its three large universities - the University of Bern, the University of Teacher Education and the Bern University of Applied Sciences - also strongly represented.65% of students would like to see sustainable development given greater weight in their studies, according to a study by the WWF. But the university institutions are developing only slowly. With the vision of shaping universities as sustainable role models, students themselves become active.
In Bern alone, from 2 to 7 March, more than two dozen volunteers will organise 30 free and public events on topics such as extinction of species, zero waste, volunteer work, the circular economy and many more will be discussed and tackled in the context of creative and exciting events. This is the question that will be addressed at this year's national opening event on 27 February 2020 in Berne, where it is already clear that those who are most affected by global warming have contributed least. This year's national opening event, organised by Sustainability Week Berne, BENE and Sustainability Week Switzerland, will therefore discuss precisely this problem with various experts* from research and practice. More information and tickets on our homepage.since this year the SWS is also active abroad with the Sustainability Week International.with the same vision sustainability weeks are already taking place in countries such as Ghana, Tanzania, Kazakhstan and China. And the team is already in contact with many students from various countries for further implementations.
Marie-Claire Graf, co-founder of the Swiss Sustainability Week and also known as "Swiss Greta", has worked to launch this project internationally. Last year she also travelled to the UN climate summit in New York to represent the voice of Swiss youth. She and the local organisers of the Berne Sustainability Week are happy to be available for interviews.
I am happy to support this project, but since I can't go there myself due to a broken foot, I hope that I motivate some of you to do so! Here is the program:
On the tour, they go to shops that I visit on my "shop tour", which of course makes me happy, I know that they take sustainability seriously in these shops.
I would also be interested in changing clothes, Tuesday 3 March 15.00-18.00, or Friday 6 March 14.30 -17.30 Urban Gardening Crash Course. Maybe one of you can go there and send me some pictures!
